FC Barcelona claim first ever Catalan Super Cup

Barça beat Espanyol in Girona to win the title in the first year that it has been played in the new format

FC Barcelona beat Espanyol on penalties at the Estadi Montilivi in Girona to add the Catalan Super Cup to the eight Copa Catalunya already won before.

Due to problems finding room in the fixture list for the tournament, the Catalan Football Federation (FCF) decided to change the format of the Copa Catalunya, so that first division clubs FC Barcelona and Espanyol meet in this one-off game for the Super Cup title, while teams in the second and third division (and the winners of the Catalan First Division) contest the old trophy. There is also a Copa Catalunya Amateur for teams playing in the lower leagues.

Even so, there were still problems scheduling the match between Barça and Espanyol. It was originally going to be played in the preseason, but as a suitable date could not be found, it was instead postponed until Wednesday night.

And there was certainly a happy ending for Barça. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, but they ended up winning 4-2 on penalties. That’s the third year in a row that the honour of being champions of Catalonia has been won by beating city rivals Espanyol in a shootout.
