Valverde during a game with FC Barcelona in the later 80 / FCB

The Athletic Club coach Ernesto Valverde is one of many current coaches with a blaugrana past. The man known as Txingurri (‘ant’ in the Basque language) arrived at FC Barcelona in the season 1988/89 from city rivals Espanyol. During his two seasons in which he wore the Barça shirt, Valverde was unlucky with injuries and was only able to play 22 games for the Club. In that time the current coach of los leones scored a total of eight goals. Two in the 1988/89 season and six in the following campaign.

In his first season with Barça he scored away at Sevilla in a 1-1 draw and at home to Málaga in a 4-0 win. The next campaign he scored away at Real Sociedad in the 2-2 draw in Atotxa, away in a 4-0 win at Cádiz and braces in a 2-0 win at Sporting Gijón and a 2-1 home win over Valencia.
