Leo Messi was the hero against Sevilla as he broke the all-time Liga goalscoring record. When the game was over, president Josep Maria Bartomeu said that “I congratulate him. We’ll have Leo here for many more years. We are delighted with what he has achieved, it’s a huge satisfaction … We knew the record was going to come. It made me very happy to see him equal it, for him, for the team and for the club”.

He then added that “Messi is the greatest player in football history, not just for Barça. There are no words to describe what he is doing … He is happy at Barcelona, where he has been for so many years, and he gets on well with his team-mates. He’s concerned about non-sporting issues but the club is supporting him. People should speak to him about football rather than other things.”

On a more general note, the president concluded by saying that “the team are playing well.. They have a manager who’s leading them in a fantastic way. They’re very ambitious and have set very high targets.”

Zubizarreta impressed

Director of sport Andoni Zubizarreta also congratulated Leo Messi after the 5-1 win. “We played well against a well-organised Sevilla team” he said. “It was a fun and intense match.”
