  • Mathieu’s first goal as a professional was against Rennes while playing for Sochaux and his first title was the League cup in 2004 with the same club. 
  • He was then at rival French team Toulouse for four seasons between 2005 and 2009, before moving to La Liga BBVA to join Valencia.
  • He spent five seasons at Valencia, playing 126 games in total, over 10,000 minutes, and scoring 6 goals. His highest goalscoring season so far was 2013/14, when he notched up 3 (all headers) and claimed another in the Europa League semi-final against Sevilla.
  • Last season, he played 2,820 minutes in the domestic league and attempted 1,490 passes, with an 82% completion rate. He has also received 9 yellow cards and one red.
  • He and Jordi Alba shared the left back position at Valencia for 3 seasons. In fact, the latter made his break into the first team because of an injury sustained by the Frenchman. They remained team mates until the 2012/13 season, when Jordi Alba left for Barça, but they have now been reunited at the Catalan club.
  • With David Albelda and Éver Banega having returned to Argentina, and with Ricardo Costa injured, Mathieu took over as captain of Valencia last season.
  • He has generally played at left back for most his career, but Unay Emery occasionally used him in left midfield. Ernesto Valverde was the first to deploy Mathieu as a centre back, shortly after he had come back from an Achilles tendon injury.
  • He represented the French national team at all junior levels before making his debut for the senior team against the USA in 2011, playing all 90 minutes. To date he has two caps for Les Bleus.
