The Joan Gamper Trophy will pit FC Barcelona against Santos FC on 2 August this summer. It will be the second time the Brazilian team participate in Barça’s summer tournament. The first time was in 1998, when the Blaugrana defeated Santos FC in penalties after a 2-2 draw.

To celebrate the friendly between the two teams, Santos FC has released a video to explain the Joan Gamper Trophy. “Two great forces in the world of football. Two good examples of football,” says the video.

Players feature in video

In the promotional video, several players from the Brazilian team show their enthusiasm and eagerness to face FC Barcelona. Léo Cittadini, says: “It will be fantastic to play against them.” Neilton, forward for Santos, says: “It’s a dream!”

Other players like Pedro Castro, midfielder for Santos, says that “the Camp Nou has a lot of history, Barça are a great team. It will be different.” Leandrinho, explains: “We will be more calm when the match beings, each player will defend his team, we’ll forget about the player who we look up to and we’ll do our best on the pitch.”

Brazilian teams that have featured in the Gamper

The Joan Gamper Trophy has hosted a total of five different Brazilian teams throughout the years: Flamengo (1968), Botafogo (1978), Vasco de Gama (1972, 1980, 1981), Internacional Porto Alegre (1982, 1989, 1991) and Santos (1998).
