Marc-André ter Stegen is the new owner of the goal in the Camp Nou for the 2014/15 season. After three excellent campaigns with Borussia Mönchengladbach, the German arrives to FC Barcelona as one of the keepers with the most potential in Europe. The Sporting Director Andoni Zubizarreta, in a press conference after the keeper had been presented, said: “We went for Ter Stegen because of all of his qualities.”

The 20th keeper since Zubi

In the last 20 years, 19 keepers have defended FC Barcelona’s goal. From Andoni Zubizarreta to Víctor Valdés. Ter Stegen, the 20th first team keeper since the sporting director played for the Club, will now try to equal his predecessors.

Of the 19 keepers to defend the goal in the last 20 years, 10 were signed from other teams and the rest were promoted from the reserve squad. Busquets, Angoy, Arnau, Reina, Jorquera, Rubén, Miño, Oier and Valdés were all promoted from Barça B (or Barça Athletic).

The youngest keeper to sign

Ter Stegen arrives to FC Barcelona at the age of 22 and, therefore, is the youngest keeper FC Barcelona have signed for the first team. Up until now the youngest to come into the Club were Zubizarreta and Robert Enke, they both signed when they were 25. Others, on the other hand, signed when they were older, like Pinto (33), Hesp (32), Bonano (31).

The new keeper with be the second-ever German to defend FC Barcelona’s goal. In the 2002/03 season, Robert Enke arrived to the Club from Benfica and became the first German keeper to play for the first team.

The presentation of Ter Stegen as FC Barcelona’s keeper, which took place this Thursday, was the first since 2007. Before Ter Stegen, José Manuel Pinto was named to the first team in January of the 2007/08 season. Since then, Barça’s goal hasn’t undergone any changes save the addition of Oier Olazábal as the third keeper of the first team.
