Wigan come away with a shock result in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup

Manchester City were eliminated from the FA Cup this Sunday afternoon, going down 2-1 at the Etihad to Wigan, who are quickly becoming City’s nemesis in the competition. In last season’s Wembley final City were beaten 0-1 by Wigan and history repeated itself this season in the quarter-finals.

Trailing after 30 minutes

City fell behind to Wigan after 27 minutes, when the former Barça player Jordi Gómez converted a penalty conceded by Demichelis (who is not eligible to play on Wednesday at the Camp Nou due to suspension). Manuel Pellegrini sent out a starting XI that had five notable absentees from his usual starting team, resting Hart, Kompany, Silva and Fernandinho. However, Touré, Nasri and Agüero did start.

City’s chances of progressing to the next round suffered a blow when Perch scored teh visitors' second on 47 minutes. From that moment on, City surged forward. Nasri pulled a goal back with a fantastic shot from long range, but the fightback wasn’t on the cards despite excellent scoring opportunities for Dzeko and Agüero.

Wigan held on to their one-goal lead and will face Arsenal in the next round of the competition.
