Villarreal first got into the top flight in 1998 and since then, Barça have played 13 league games at the Madrigal since then, wining on seven occasions, losing five times and drawing just the one game. Below we look at some of the most exciting moments from that period:

1998/99: First game.... at the Mestalla (2-3)
Barça played Villarreal away late in the 1989/99 season – May 9, 1999 – and with the Madrigal closed, the two met at Valencia’s Mestalla ground. Kluivert, Cocu and Rivaldo earned a close fought win for the team, who two weeks later won their second successive league title.

2000/01: Crazy eight goal thriller (4-4)
The game with most goals between the two sides saw Villarreal storm to a three goal lead before  Rivaldo and Kluivert, with a hat trick  rounded off in injury time brought Barça level. Rivaldo also missed a penalty in the game.

2001/02: Hard fought win and a red for Xavi (0-1)
Carles Rexach’s side took the points thanks to a great Kluivert strike despite a host of chances for Villarreal in a game that saw Xavi pick up one of just two red cards in his 470 league game career so far – the other came at the Bernabeu in 2008.

2003/04: Anderson strikes back (2-1)
Two years later, Barça went down to a last minute winner from their ex-striker Sonny Anderson, who played at the Club between 1997 and 1999.

2009/10: Champions’ reaction (1-4)
There was no room for a slip up, as Barça travelled to the Madrigal just a few days after the painful Champions League semi-final defeat to Inter Milan and with a win against Villarreal vital to keep the league challenge alive. Messi (2), Xavi and Bojan ensured a happy end to a tough week.
