FC Barcelona will play their debut match of the 2013/14 preseason this Wednesday at the Allianz Arena against Bayern Munich. The Blaugrana will open the season against a very well known rival. In addition to being eliminated in the Champions League by the European champions last season, Barça and Bayern also faced off in a previous preseason. It was in the 2011 Audi Cup. The two teams featured in the final of the competition and the result was 2-0 for the Balugrana thanks to two goals from Thiago Alcántara, who signed for the German team this summer.

Bayern Munich, well prepared for the showdown

While this will be Barça’s first match of the preseason, it will be Bayern’s seventh. The team managed by Pep Guardiola has played a total of six matches, all of which ended in victory for the German champions. The level of Bayern’s rivals has steadily increased with each match, but the results have all been similar. The first test for Bayern was against an amateur team, and the end result was 0-13 for Guardiola’s men. Four days later, the Germans took on Brescia, a team that plays in Italy’s Serie B, and won 0-3 thanks to goals from Müller, Kroos and Kirchhoff.

Upon returning from Italy, Bayern faced Sonnenhof Grossaspach, a regional team. The result was, once again, was lopsided. Goals from Shaqiri (2), Kroos, Robben, Alaba and Green gave the Germans a 0-6 victory. One day later, Bayern faced Hansa Rostock which ended in a 4-0 thanks to goals from Lahm, Ribéry, Müller and Mandzukic.

Last Saturday Bayern played its first important matches: the Telekom Cup. In the the semi-final round, Bayern defeated Hamburg by 4-0 thanks to goals from Boateng, Mandzukic, Kroos and Müller, and they qualified for the final, where they faced Borussia Mönchengladbach. Their next match will be against Barça, in the Uli Hoeness Cup, which is scheduled for 18.30 at the Allianz Arena.

Another start in German territory

Barça planned to kick off the preseason against Lechia Gdansk this past Saturday, but the news of Tito Vilanova’s departure for health reasons forced the Club to postpone the game, which means that the Barça will open the preseason with a match against Bayern Munich. This won’t be the first time Barça begin their preseason against a German rival. And we don’t have to go too far back either, last season Barça kicked off the preseason against Hamburg. The match ended in a 1-2 victory for Barça thanks to goals from Dani Alves and Gerard Deulofeu. For the second consecutive year, Barça will being the season in German territory.

After Munich, straight to Oslo

Barca will travel to Munich on Wednesday. The team will depart from El Prat Airport early tomorrow morning and arrive in Germany at midday. After the match, which is scheduled for 18.30 , the team will spend the night in Munich instead of returning to Barcelona. Three days after the match at Allianz Arena, the Blaugrana will take on Valerenga in Oslo.

The team will travel from Munich to Norway on Thursday morning for the second match of the preseason, which is scheduled for Saturday at 19.00 at Ullevaal Stadion. The rival, Valerenga, is also a well known team to the Blaugrana.
