All the background details to the first ever competitive match between these two historic clubs, FC Barcelona and Ajax, managed by former Barça star Frank de Boer

- Despite their long and successful records in Europe, the two clubs have never met in a competitive match


- Before losing the return leg of last season’s semi-final against Bayern Munich, Barça boasted a 21-match unbeaten run in the Camp Nou, including 16 victories


- The last Dutch side to visit the Camp Nou was PSV Eindhoven in the 1997/98 season.  The match ended in a 2-2 draw.


- Barça have an excellent record against teams from the Eredivisie – five wins, six draws and just one defeat.


- Barça have never lost against Dutch opposition in the Camp Nou – a total of three wins and three draws.


- Ajax have lost their last eight matches against teams from the Spanish league.  Their last victory came against Celta Vigo (1-0), in the 2003/04 Champions League.


- Bojan Krkic will once again come up against Barça.  He scored 26 goals for Barça between 2007 and 2011 and returned to the Camp Nou for the first time last season with AC Milan.


- Ajax manager Frank de Boer and director of football Marc Overmars are both former Barça players.


- Christian Poulsen played for Sevilla between 2006 and 2008 and made six appearances against Barça.


- Cesc Fàbregas played for Arsenal against Ajax in the group stage of the 2005/06 Champions League.  They won 1-2 in Amsterdam and drew 0-0 in London.


- Ajax’s Finnish international Niklas Moisander crossed swords with Barça’s Spanish internationals in the match played on 6th September.  Spain beat Finland 0-2, including a goal from Jordi Alba.


- Barça have started their Champions League campaign at home in seven out of the last ten seasons (including today’s match).


- Barça haven’t lost their opening game in the Champions League since losing 3-2 against Newcastle at Saint James’ Park in the 1996/97 season.
