Even though there are two more match-days left in the first half of the 2012/13 season - Espanyol and Málaga -, FC Barcelona are winter champions thanks to this evening’s victory over Valladolid (1-3). The victory allows Barça to stay nine points clear at the top of the table over second place Atlético Madrid with six points still left in play before the first half of La Liga comes to a close.
Barça have won 16 of their 17 La Liga matches, which has allowed the Blaugrana to notch up 49 out of 51 possible points. The Blaugrana are also the highest scoring team in La Liga with 59 goals and they’ve secured the best ever start in La Liga history.
Champions of La Liga on 11 occasions
Barça have won a total of 21 La Liga titles, 11 of which were won after Barça claimed the honorary title of winter champions. The last time the Blaugrana won the La Liga title after finishing first in the first half of the season was in 2010/11, when Guardiola led the team to 52 points from 19 matches. In fact, that is the largest point haul in the first half a La Liga season ever. Tito Vilanova’s side have two matches to break the record.
