Tito Vilanova was pleased with his team’s victory at the Benito Villamarín: “The first 30 minutes were the best we’ve had all year. However, like I warned before the game, Betis scored before the break without creating many chances, and it got complicated from then on out. In the second half they pressured us high up the pitch and they created chances to score ... I’m pleased. In the first half we dominated the game and in the second half we managed to grind out the win.”

Along these lines, the Blaugrana manager praised his defence: “These men will be remembered for their spectacular way of playing football, but they should also be remembered for how well they play defence. Things happen for a reason and before tonight we hadn’t won here in seven years.”

“Let’s enjoy Messi”

The Catalan manager also talked about Messi’s new all-time record for goals scored in a calendar year: “We’re pleased that Messi helped us out with his two goals and that he broke Müller’s record. He still has three matches left this year, let’s see if he can extend his record. We hope that he still has a lot left to give because he’s still very young. He’s a world-renowned star that has a series of attributes that make him nearly unrepeatable.”

The Barça manager then encouraged the world to enjoy what Messi does on the pitch: “We shouldn’t heap more pressure on him. His record this year is absolutely brutal. Let’s enjoy the moment and not focus on how many goals he might score in the future.”
