- This was Barça’s biggest win on the opening night of cup football for four years. In 2007/08 they won 3-0 at Alcoyano in the round of 32.

- Clean sheets are becoming a common sight in Barcelona’s opening cup ties. That is now six times running that the Catalans have not leaked a single goal, after 2007 (0-3 at Alocoyano), 2008 (0-1 at Benidorm), 2009 (0-2 at Cultural Leonesa), 2010 (0-2 at Ceuta), 2011 (0-1 at L’Hospitalet) and now 2012 (0-3 at Alavés).

- This is the fifth time that Barça have won their first cup tie 3-0, and on all of the previous occasions they have progressed to the next round.

- Cesc scored again against Alavés, and now has five in his last six games (Sevilla –two-, Benfica, Rayo and Alavés).

- Sergi Roberto, who started at Mendizorroza, had not played any first team games this season. He played all 90 minutes and won 7 balls and completed 69 of his total of 74 passes.

- The other player making his first appearance of the year was regular cup keeper José Manuel Pinto. When Iniesta left the field, he even got some time wearing the captain’s armband but didn’t have much work to do other than a late save from a Guzmán effort.

- One week after getting his first goal of the season, the first of the two against Celtic at the Camp Nou, Andrés Iniesta found the net yet again.

- Iniesta also scored in the opening cup tie last season, the only goal of the 1-0 win at l'Hospitalet (0-1).

- Villa’s form is still improving and, like he did at Vallecas, on Tuesday he again opened the scoring with a tremendous goal. He is scoring an average of one goal every 73 minutes. - Mascherano won the most balls last night (16) and also made the most passes (95).

- Cesc and Villa both scored last night, and are joint second in the overall squad ranking for goals in the Copa del Rey. They have five each, but the runaway leader is, naturally enough, Leo Messi, with 17.

- Alves was back after getting injured against Real Madrid, and proved a constant danger down the wing. The Brazilian made by far the most crosses of the night, 13, while Cesc, Montoya and Alexis made just one each.
