Martín Montoya has been another of Barça’s success stories so far this season, repaying Tito Vilanova’s faith in him with some excellent performances as cover for the team’s injury hit back line and speaking to the media on Thursday he admitted: “I’m really happy. I was hoping to play, but I didn’t expect quite so many games”.

“Alves and I both like attacking”

Dani Alves is generally seen as the team’s first choice right back and Montoya has no doubt about the Brazilian’s right to the spot: “he’s the best full back in the business, even though he’s not at 100% right now. I’ve got to learn from him I’d love to take over from him one day”. Montoya also sees a similarity between his and the Brazilian’s style of play: “Dani and I both love attacking football. We are okay as defenders too– we try not to let our opponents settle, but Alves has so much talent – I’ve still got to improve tactically”.

Time to recover

Montoya, who was one of the Spanish squad who made another long transatlantic journey after their friendly against Panama this week, believes: “right now I’ve got to rest and recover”, whilst he also admitted: “it was a reward for me to be in the squad. It is a privilege to go with the full international squad and I’m happy to have been called up. I would have liked to have got on the pitch, but if I keep working hard, I’m sure I’ll get another chance”.

Finally, Montoya referred to his effort in the closing minutes of the game against Real Madrid, which hit the bar and would have given Barça a 3-2 win: “I’ve thought a lot about that shot and people have come up to me in the street to talk about it. It was one of those efforts that could have gone in, or could have gone miles over”.
