With Gerard Piqué and Carles Puyol both out injured, Javier Mascherano played a key part in Barça’s defence on Sunday night, with Adriano alongside him making his debut at centre back. Mascherano reckoned the Brazilian: “adapted well because he is fast and he knows the way we play  - he’s been here for two years now – and maybe it was easier for him to fit in than for Alex Song who has only just got here”.

“I’m not the first choice centre half”

Mascherano was speaking after the game on the Barça TV programme ‘El Marcador’, where he also made clear: “I’m not the first choice centre half – I am here so that when something happens, I can go out and do a job”. The Argentinean also believes that the team’s versatility meant that against Madrid: “we showed we are a great team and that we can overcome difficulties. To play a Clásico with two of the best centre backs in the world both out puts you at a big disadvantage”.

“We could have come away with more”

Although Mascherano reckoned: “we could have come away with more”, he stressed the importance of  the team’s attitude: “the good sensations are more important than the difference in points. We could have gone out and sat back and just seen what happened, but we didn’t. We were true to ourselves and went out to win the game. We grew as the game went on and we reached the level demanded of us”.

“The team is full of life”

Mascherano also commented: “there were people who expressed doubts at the start of the season that we were beginning a new cycle, but we have demonstrated that we are still the same. This is a team which is full of life and we are determined to carry on doing what we have been doing over the last few seasons”.

Mistake in the Super Cup

Mascherano is also willing to accept his own errors and he admitted his mistake for Madrid’s first goal in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup: “I felt very guilty about it and although I didn’t see tonight’s game as a chance for revenge, it was an opportunity to show to myself that I wouldn’t make the same mistake again and that I could be at the level the circumstances demanded”.
