Leo Messi is among the candidates for the Laureus awards for the fourth consecutive year. The Argentine has been nominated for the World Sportsman of the Year award along with Usain Bolt and Mo Farah, the swimmer Michael Phelps, the Formula 1 pilot Sebastian Vettel and the cyclist Badley Wiggins. The winner will be announced on March 11, during the Laureus Gala in Rio de Janeiro.

It’s worth noting that Messi has had an incredible year. He surpassed César as FC Barcelona’s all-time goalscorer and he broke the record set by Gerd Müller for goals scored in a calendar year.

The Spanish national team, also nominated

Leo Messi isn’t the only FC Barcelona player that's been nominated for a Laureus award. The Spanish national team has been nominated for the Best Team of the Year award. The team managed by Del Bosque will contend with the Chinese Olympic table tennis team (they won four gold medals and two silvers); the European Ryder Cup team; the champions of the NBA, the Miami Heat; Formula 1’s championship team, Red Bull; and the United States Olympic basketball team (they won gold in London).
