Javier Saviola returns to Camp Nou for first time in 8 years

The current Malaga striker and former FC Barcelona man last faced his former club at the Camp Nou in 2005 as a Sevilla player, and lost 2-1 This was the first and only time he faced Barça while playing for Monaco, Sevilla, Real Madrid and Benfica

In 2001/02, Javier Saviola arrived at Barça from River Plate of Buenos Aires. The Camp Nou was his home until 2004, when he went on loan to Monaco, and later Sevilla, before a brief spell back in the Catalan capital. Indeed, it was while playing for Sevilla that he last played in the Barça stadium, where his side lost 2-1.

After the Sánchez Pizjuán, the diminutive striker was back at FCB in the 2006/07 season. He then has uneventful spells at Real Madrid and Benfica where he failed to win regular places in either team, despite winning one league and three league Cups.

In Malaga, he has returned to his former self. Six goals in La Liga and the Champions League have marked the resurgence of a player who will be back at the Camp Nou for the quarter final of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday.

Last 64 minutes

On December 11, 2005, he was wearing the shirt of Sevilla, managed by Juande Ramos, when he spent his last 64 minutes on the famous Barça turf. The home side, under the orders of Frank Rijkaard, went behind to a Kanoute goal, but bounced back through an inspired Samuel Eto’o and Ronaldinho Gaúcho to clinch a 2-1 win.
