Andoni Zubizarreta, the technical secretary for professional football at FC Barcelona, discussed a number of issues related to the club in an interview on Tuesday with local broadcaster Catalunya. “The essence of Barça is its idea of play”, he said, adding that “everything else works from that basis”. He also spoke about the state of coach Tito Vilanova’s health. “Tito is fine and undergoing a recovery and rehabilitation process. He is not on the bench, but he’s still working for us from a distance”.

“Being the FC Barcelona is a complex process, our defensive line moves very far forward and although the goalkeeper is our first line of attack, he also needs to be able to be get back and cover”, said a man who knows all about wearing the gloves in the Barça first team, and was speaking about Víctor Valdés’ decision to leave the club when his contract expires. “We met his agents one day and told them we were keen for him to renew his contract. They said they appreciated our offer, but that he had already made his decision” he explained.

Asked about future contract renewals, such as that of Abidal, Zubizarreta insisted there was no hurry. “The aim of the process is for Abidal to play again. Life has its moments and situations and it’s a long and difficult road, so we always have to stand by him. We have come here together. We don’t want to rush things. We’ll take things one step at a time”, he said, before moving onto other players. “We’ll sit down with Gerard Deulofeu and talk about his continuity, the same goes for Rafinha”.

As for David Villa, Zubizarreta commented that “he’s coming back from a long, complex and difficult injury. We are in the process of getting things back to normal. We think he’s a great player, and he can score goals. We hope to celebrate plenty more with him this season” he said.

Finally, he spoke about how happy the club is with the job being done by reserve coach Eusebio Sacristán, saying that “we will have to sit down with him and find out about his views. He has had to build and break teams that are always changing and are full of youngsters” he commented.
