The match that will be played on August 8 in Göteborg will bring back memories of the 2009 and 2011 Champions League finals. FC Barcelona and Manchester United will once again face off after two of the four Champions League crowns were decided between the two teams. Both the 2009 and 2011 finals saw Barça take the title by two goals. In 2009, Eto’o and Messi secured FC Barcelona’s third European title (2-0), whilst in 2011 Pedro, Messi and Villa secured Barça’s fourth Champions League trophy.

Friendly in Washington, D.C. in 2011

The last time the Azulgranas played against the legendary side managed by Sir Alex Ferguson, however, was in a friendly match. The game took place this past summer, it was FC Barcelona’s fourth preseason match before the 2011/12 La Liga season. On the 30th of July, in Washington, D.C., during the first game of the North American tour, Manchester United beat Barça by 2 to 1.

Third visit to Ullevi

This summer’s match will take place in Ullevi, at Göteborg’s stadium, where FC Barcelona have played two official matches. The first was in the away leg of the European Cup semi-final, played on April 2nd, 1986. The game was won by the Swede side in convincing fashion (3-0). However, the Swedish team lost in the penalty shoot out in the return leg.

The second match in Sweden took place in the 1994/95 season, in the group stage of the Champions League. Göteborg also won that match by 2 to 1.

Besides the two official matches against Göteborg, FC Barcelona have also played four other matches in Sweden:
