Real Madrid brushed aside Osasuna with two goals apiece from Cristiano Ronaldo and Higuain – which takes him to 20 for the season -with Benzema getting the other in the 1-5 win. That was Osasuna’s second defeat on the run, but they stay in sixth, with Atlético Madrid and Sevilla closing in on them after their wins at the weekend: Simeone’s team beat Getafe 3-1, with Falcao getting his twentieth of the campaign, whilst Sevilla scored three for the third game on the run when they beat Mallorca 3-1.

Valencia hold onto third spot

Valencia hold onto third spot, despite being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Levante, who themselves keep fifth place, two points ahead of Osasuna and two behind Málaga, who blew the chance to move into third when they were sucker punched by Betis to go down 0-2 in a game they dominated throughout.

Zaragoza keep hopes alive

The Betis result was maybe the most surprising of the weekend, but it is Zaragoza who continue to confound expectations, beating Sporting 1-2 and chalking up their third win on the run with yet another late winner - this time in injury time by Lafita – to lift them off the bottom. With Granada also beating Racing 0-1, Zaragoza are now third from bottom, three ahead of the bottom two and just four behind Villarreal, whose boss Miguel Angel Lotina, was disappointed with his side’s goalless draw with Espanyol:” a draw at home isn’t a positive for us in the situation we are in right now”.

In the weekend’s other game between Real Sociedad and Rayo, the Basques defeated their fellow mid tablers 4-0, but the win came a price for the Basques, whose much coveted defender Inigo Martinez suffered a serious knee injury that will put an end to his season.
