Real Madrid looked to be cruising at Mestalla after Sergio Ramos added to Benzema's opener to put them two up on 72 minutes, but ex-Madrid hit-man Roberto Soldado grabbed two, with Ronaldo getting one in between, and in a frantic finish Valencia came desperately close to equalising.  The win keeps Mourinho's team three points clear, whilst Valencia are now four points behind Barça. Llevant failed to get back into the top three when they were beaten 3-2 at the Vicente Calderon, whilst Malaga moved to within three points of the Champions League spots with a 1-3 win in Santander – a result that sends Cuper's team bottom.

Bilbao keep up good form

Seville have slipped a couple of points behind Malaga after they were beaten 1-2 by Athletic Bilbao in the Sanchez Pijuan, with Iraola and Matrinez on the mark for the Basques and Jesus Navas getting the home side's goal. The win takes Bilbao to within a point of Seville and marked their 11th game on the run without defeat, as they have recovered from their poor start to the campaign to again challenge for the European places.

Injury blow for Real

Bilbao's fellow Basques Real Sociedad could only manage a goalless draw at home to Espanyol and although that point has taken them off the bottom, they are only ahead of Racing on goal difference and in Sunday's game they also lost their Spanish under 21 midfielder Asier Illarramendi with a cartilage injury that will keep him out for a while.

Granada game abandoned

Granada are also stuck on 9 points, though they have a game in hand after Sunday night's game was abandoned on 63 minutes, when a youngster from a local detention centre who had been invited to the game by the club, threw an umbrella at the linesman, who was forced off, causing the ref to call off the match. At that point, Granada were 2-1 up, after coming back from an early Mallorca opener. Mallorca are on 10 points, alongside Zaragoza and Getafe, who went down 2-1 at Sporting thanks to a 90th minute Nacho Novo winner which takes Preciado's team up to 14th on 12 points. Betis are just a point ahead of Sporting after recording their eighth game on the run without a win when they went down 1-0 at Villarreal, who are now a point above them, with Osasuna and Rayo who drew 0-0 in Pamplona just above them in 11th and 10th places.
