FC Barcelona will face Rayo Vallecano this Sunday (21:30, Canal+) at Vallecas. The two teams have played against each other a total of 25 times, the first match was in the 1977/78 season, in the Madrid-based team’s debut year in Spain’s top flight. History is very much on Barça’s side, as they’ve won 13 games, tied 8 and lost only 4 against Rayo.

The last match against Rayo

The last game played at Vallecas between the two sides was played in the 2002/03 season. Rayo came away with the victory thanks to a goal from Azcoitia on the 65th minute of play (1-0). It was week 13 of the Liga, and it was also Rayo’s last season in the Primera División until the present season; last year Rayo were promoted after finishing second behind Betis in the Liga Adelante.

Favourable stats for Barça

Barça have scored 65 times and only conceded 25 against Rayo. Barça’s players have been booked a total of 38 times to Rayo’s 56 (plus two red cards for each team). Barça have scored from the penalty spot seven times out of eight attempts, while Rayo have scored six out of nine tries.

If we focus on FC Barcelona's numbers away from the Camp Nou, the Azulgranas have played 12 matches as visitors at Vallecas. In this case, the numbers are a bit more equal: FC Barcelona have won three times, drawn six and lost three. At the Camp Nou, however, the Catalan side won 10 times, tied 2 and only lost once (in the 2000/01 season).
