Bayer Leverkusen, Barça’s opponent in the Champions League, won their second game on the trot in the Bundesliga. Their latest victim: Cologne, 14th placed team in the German championship. With this victory, Bayer is able to maintain their Europa League spot.

Lars Bender opened up the scoring on 16 minutes thanks to an assists from Vedran Corluka. Bayer wanted more and they kept to the task of netting their second throughout the first half. Stefan Reinartz and Renato Augusto came close, however Cologne’s defence did well to deny any more goals in the first 45 minutes.

The second half picked up where the first left off, Bayer dominating. In fact, five minutes after the break, Bender netted his brace thanks to a pass from Augusto. The team led by Robin Dutt could have scored more throughout the match, they came close when Stefan Kiessling’s shot crashed into the crossbar. Final score 0-2.

Before playing the return Champions League match against Barça at the Camp Nou, they will have to face Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.
