For the first time in its history Sports Illustrated, the prestigious American magazine, is holding a Facebook vote for its readers around the world to decide who they would like to appear on the last cover of the year. Readers are being asked to pick their favourite sporting moment of 2011 and one of the options is Messi celebrating his goal in the Champions League final at Wembley. The magazine firmly believes that FC Barcelona's performance against Manchester United consecrated them as the best team in the world.

To vote for Messi, all you have to do is go to the Sports Illustrated Facebook page and put the Argentinian on the top of your list.

The weekly magazine has 3 million subscribers and is read by about 23 million people.

UEFA team of the year

Voting is also open to choose the members of the all-star team for 2011. Votes are open until January 5 and the winning team will be announced on the UEFA website on January 18. uefa.com has nominated a total of 55 players and 5 managers and the fans now get to pick the winners. The Barça players on the shortlist are Valdés, Alves, Piqué, Mascherano, Abidal, Xavi, Iniesta and Messi, while Josep Guardiola is one of the managers. To vote you simply have to go to uefa.com and pick the best team of 2011.
