Gumbau in action against Figueres / VICTOR SALGADO - FCB

Barça B are through to the semi-finals of this season’s Copa Catalunya after overcoming Figueras away from home in a penalty shoot out. Gerard López’s side were held to a 0-0 draw over 90 minutes but two excellent saves from keeper Ortolà helped them to a 3-1 win on penalties.

The Cup quarter-final was an entertaining affair despite the lack of goals in normal time. Both side had opportunities to win the game in the 90 minutes but good goalkeeping and poor finishing combined to see the game end goalless in Vilatenim. Ortolà, later to be the hero in the shoot out, produced a good save after 13 minutes to keep the score at 0-0, denying Figueres’ Sergi Romero.

The home side sat back initially to try and soak up the pressure from the blaugranes but in the second half they came out of their shell. A shot from Venzal after 63 minutes just grazed the post and ten minutes from time Quimo sent an effort just over the crossbar as Figueres threatened to claim a place in the last four. For Barça B, Grimaldo went close and Dongou had an effort cleared of the line inside the last ten minutes before he was shown a straight red card right on the full time whistle.

Penalties decide

Gerard López’s side held their nerve from 12 yards out in the lottery of the penalty shoot out. Quinti, Cámara and Gumbau all found the net for Barça B. In reply Romero and Pedro had their efforts saved by Ortolà, whilst Venzal missed the target all together. Only Chico converted his penalty for Figueres who go out at the quarter final stage as Barça B move into the last four of the Copa Catalunya.
