CD Lugo v FC Barcelona B: Late frustration (3-2)

CD Lugo v FC Barcelona B: Late frustration (3-2)

Two late goals from the Galicians turned hope into despair for the reserves on Saturday

Barça B came from behind against a side that is unbeaten in the second half of the season, but with mere minutes to go and a famous victory in the horizon, everything went wrong.

One goal each

After a frenetic end-to-end start, the home side gradually gained control of the game and had Barça B pegged back in their own half for long sections of the first half. A Lugo goal looked inevitable, and it finally came. New signing Israel Puerto tapped the ball into an empty net following a delightful team move and it was 1-0. Barça B needed to find a reaction, but although Dongou and Cámara both came close, it was Lugo that continued to create most of the football and chances. And then, when it was least expected, local stopper Dani Mallo made a mess of a Grimaldo cross and ended up gifting Sandro with a chance to equalise – and the Barça striker didn’t waste the opportunity. 1-1.

The goal was the boost the reserves needed, and they came out strong after the break. Grimaldo came close from a free kick and Dongou had a goal correctly disallowed by the referee. Barça B were suddenly in complete control and moved 2-1 ahead after 65 minutes when Juan Cámara struck from outside the area.

Miserable finale

Lugo manager Quique Setién decided to throw caution to the wind by playing a three-man defence in a bid to get back into the game. And the gamble paid off. Caballero made the most of his height to rise to meet an Iriome cross and gets things back level after 82 minutes. From governing the game, Barça B were suddenly in disarray. Ortolà produced handball-esque save with five minutes to go to deny Lugo but three minutes later Sergi Samper put the ball in his own net to spark off wild celebrations in the Anxo Carro stadium.

The defeat was the third for Barça B in as many games and means they stay in the relegation zone with 27 points.
