Barça B v Girona FC: Defeat in Catalan derby (2-4)

Second placed Girona come from behind to beat the reserves in Saturday's second division fixture

Barça B lost a vibrant match at home to (2-4) after Sandro’s early goal had promised plenty in the reserve team’s battle to avoid relegation.

The opening goal was ca racker, scored from outside the area, while a second almost followed shortly after when Munir headed wide. And on the quarter hour, Halilovic sent an effort flying just too high.

Girona didn’t cause any major threat until the 25th minute when Suárez managed to block a Sandaza shot from midfield, but with three minutes before the break they pulled level when Jaime Mata converted just after the Girona keeper had made a fine save off Granell.

Girona turn it round

The visitors then went ahead when Eloi struck home from the edge of the area, and that was the impetus for them to play their best football of the afternoon, with Sandaza pouncing on the rebound of his shot after 54 minutes to further extend their lead to 3-1. Cifu then almost added another on the counter attack, but this time the ball found the post.

Barça B didn’t let their heads drop. Adama coming on for Halilovic brought new depth to their game and forced Girona further and further back into their own half. Grimaldo thumped a free kick onto the crossbar and then Sandro did find the net but, despite protests, the flag was up for offside.

Adama narrows the gap

With ten minutes to go, Suárez saved a one on one with Mata, and in the counter attack immediately after Adama pulled it back to 3-2. Barça threw all they could at Girona in search of an equaliser, with Palencia defied by goalkeeper Becerra in injury time. Then another Girona counter attack in the final seconds saw Cifu finish off an away win that means that one Catalan side remains strongly in contention for promotion to the first division, but the other, Barça B, stay in the relegation zone.
