Gerard Deulofeu and Alejandro Grimaldo won the Under-19 European Championship with the Spanish national team this Sunday. The two FC Barcelona players were essential pieces in Julen Lopetegui’s team throughout the tournament. In fact, both Deulofeu and Grimaldo featured in Spain’s starting line-up against Greece, Portugal, Estonia, France and, again, against Greece in the final.

5 out of 5

Both the Valencia-born player as well as the Catalan played all five games in the lead up to the final against Greece. In terms of minutes played, Grimaldo spent more time on the pitch than his Barça teammate, with a total of 450 minutes, he was only substituted in overtime in the semifinal round against France. Deulofeu, on the other hand, played a total of 440 minutes and he was subbed out on three occasions. Furthermore, Deulofeu scored two goals in the tournament, both of them coming in the semifinal against France.

Grimaldo, the youngest player

The FC Barcelona left back, Grimaldo, had a very solid performance throughout the tournament. The Valencia-born player was the youngest man on the Spanish roster (16 years old) but that didn’t stop him from securing a spot in the Spanish starting line-up. Playing as Spain’s left back, he also showcased his ability to go on the attack, where he provided excellent crosses, and he even finished the tournament with an assist.

Deulofeu, the player with the second-most shots on goal

The Catalan, along with Jesé Rodríguez, was one of the best players of the tournament. Besides his two goals against France, Deulofeu notched up the second-most shots on goal throughout the Euro, with a total of 10. Coming at the opposing team’s goal from both the left and the right side of the pitch, the Azulgrana striker was involved in all of Spain’s attacking plays. Deulofeu’s pace, dribbling and shots certainly set him apart as one of the standout players of the tournament.

In addition, this is the 17-year-old’s second consecutive Euro title after last year’s Under-19 Euro in Romania. Deulofeu was accompanied by another Barça player in that tournament, Sergi Gómez.

The player set to retrun to Barça B

Both the FC Barcelona B players are scheduled to join Eusebio Sacristán’s team next week. Gerard Deulofeu will start training on Monday, July 23rd and Alejandro Grimaldo will join the team a week later (Monday, July 30th).
