Ilie Sánchez missed most of last year due to injury, but he made his return to competitive football at the end of the season. This year, however, the Azulgrana has turned into a permanent fixture in Eusebio Sacristán’s starting line-ups.

Barça B captain

Barça B’s number 4 started the 2012/13 season with a bang. He’s been named to the starting line-up in all three of the team’s Liga Adelante matches and he’s played almost every minute of every match. He played 70 minutes in the first game of the season, against Almería; 78 minutes against Real Madrid Castilla; and 90 minutes against Centre d’Esports Sabadell at the Miniestadi.

Ilie was also named Barça B’s captain this year. The player said that he’s taking on the challenge with “pride and responsibility.” He added, “it should give you pride to wear the captain armband for FC Barcelona. I try to learn from those that went before me and I want to help my team-mates.”

Versatile and tactically gifted

This is Ilie’s fourth year with the reserve side, which makes him one of the most experienced players on the Barça B roster. The player brings balance to the team, he’s known for his excellent positional play on the pitch and he can function as a creative midfielder, defensive midfielder and out on the wing, if necessary. “I try to cover the spaces we leave open when we go forward, it allows me to apply pressure on the opposing team if we lose the ball.”
