B team youngster Jonathan dos Santos reflected on the team’s season, in which under Eusebio Sacristán they finished eighth, and also on his own campaign, which has also included five games with the first team. In the Spanish Cup, he figured in both games against Hospitalet and in the Champions League group game against Milan in Italy which ended 2-3 for Barça as well as starting in the 2-1 win over Real Sociedad in the league and playing in the game against Malaga. Dos Santos was also part of the squad that travelled to the World Club Cup in Japan.

How did you end the season?
“The team did a great job and we’ll take the memory of that last game and a very good season as a whole”.

You finished eighth after coming third last season, but you can still feel happy with the campaign, you never dropped into the danger zone at all.
“They are completely different seasons – we are in the second division with a very young squad averaging about 20 . I am happy with the work we put in and how the season finished”.

You’ve been playing in midfield this season – a position you’ve not figured in for quite a while. What have you learned and what has this season meant for you?
“I played there when I was a kid and so I was used to it. I think I’ve learnt a lot and matured as a player. I’ve improved in the defensive aspect too I felt very comfortable there. I’d have to thank the boss for all the confidence he’s shown in me, because he’s played me a lot. I think I’ve had a very good season”.

Now you start your holidays and then, in principal, you’ll be joining the first team for pre-season training?
“In principal, yes – but right now I just want to focus on my holidays –whatever comes after that is something I’ll hope to make the most of”.

Have you got a good relationship with the new first team coach?
“I’ve been more or less three years working with the group and both Guardiola and Tito have treated me fantastically. Let’s hope they keep having confidence in the youth players.

Do you feel that this is the time to make the step up?
“Yes, I’ve worked my way gradually through the youth teams and I have grown as a person and as a player. All the coaches I’ve had have helped me so much. I don’t know if this is my moment, but I believe my future is here at Barcelona. I’ve never thought of moving anywhere else and I hope I can stay here”.

Does it all seem so much easier when you play alongside the first team players?
“Yes, of course. Since we all know the philosophy that the first team have and we try and apply that in the reserve and youth teams, so that makes things easier. When you are playing with big stars like Xavi or Iniesta, football is an easy game”.

He will not play in the Olympic Games

Jonathan dos Santos will not be at the Olympic Games this summer after missing out on the Mexican squad for the games.
