Umtiti's Lyon origins

The centre back grew up in the French city, which Barça will visit in the Champions League Last 16 to play Olympique Lyonnais

FC Barcelona's being drawn against Olympique Lyon for the Champions League Last 16 brings back fond memories for several members of the squad, as is the case for Samuel Umtiti. The centre back grew up in the French city that Barça will visit in February for their first knockout tie in Europe's top club competition.

Umtiti's origins in Lyon were featured in a special Barça TV trip for the 'Històries' series. The show explored the neighbourhood where he used to live, the place where he played football for FC Menival and his school that was located alongside the pitch. Friends from his formative years recount what the future World Cup winner was like as a boy.

It was with Olympique Lyon that Umtiti made his professional debut, and he played 170 games for the French club over the course of five seasons. All this and more is covered in this special video: ‘Sam, the kid from Menival.'
