RCD Espanyol v FC Barcelona Women: Stunning derby victory (1-6)

Three Jenni Hermoso goals, two from Gemma Gili and another from Bàrbara demonstrated Barça's superiority leaving them as sole leaders in the league table

The derby in the womens' First Division ended with a comprehensive victory for Barça women. Xavi Llorens' team imposed themselves away to Espanyol at the Ciutat Esportiva Dani Jarque and become sole leaders of the competition with an impeccable 24 points from 24. A Jenni Hermoso hat-trick, two from Gemma Gili and a goal from Bàrbara Latorre were the difference between the two teams. Before the break, Brenda scored against a Barcelona rearguard that had not conceded in 809 minutes of action.

The blaugranas assumed absolute control from the start but were negated any clear-cut chances by a spirited home defence. Gemma Gili found a way through with a shot from distance and opened the scoring for the away team. Straight after that Jenni Hermoso doubled the advantage with a precise lob to beat the home keeper Mimi. Llorens' team had opened up an early lead that they never relinquished.

One goal against, followed by a flurry

Espanyol got one back with their first attempt on goal thanks to Brenda's lob over Barça goalkeeper Paños. This was the first time Barça had conceded in the league this season and the response was immediate thanks to Alexia's assist for Hermoso's second goal of the night.

At the start of the second half Espanyol looked to reduce the deficit but this was shortlived as Gili also bagged her second of the night, almost guaranteeing all three points for the away team. Jenni completed her hat-trick shortly after when she provided the finish to an excellent team move. Following this, both teams brought on substitutes and Barça sub Bàrbara completed the rout with an impressive solo goal.

There was plenty of time left on the clock and the 6-1 scoreline looked ominous for Espanyol. However, Mimi spared the home side any futher embarassment saving well from Olga Garcia and Jenni. This victory gives Barça women a two point lead over Atlético Madrid at the top of the table and swells their total of goals scored to 33 for the season so far with only one conceded.
