10 years since Messi's historic goal against Getafe

On Tuesday 18 April it will be a decade since Leo Messi scored a Maradona-esque goal against Getafe at the Camp Nou which has gone down as one of the best strikes in the history of football
10 years ago on Tuesday, Messi scored a stunning goal which will live long in the memory. The Maradona-esque strike against Getafe in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey in 2006/07 went down as one of the best goals scored in the history of football as Messi started in his own half, dribbled past five players and put the ball past Luis Garcia.

18 April 2007 was the date when FC Barcelona played Getafe in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals. In the 28th minute Messi left the crowd speechless with a goal reminiscent of his compatriot Diego Armando Maradona.

The Argentinian controlled a pass from Xavi Hernández on the right-hand side of his half and he went past Paredes and then nutmegged Nacho. Then he dribbled past Nacho again before leaving Alexis and Belenguer for dead as well. Once he was in the opposition’s box he is confronted by Luis Garcia rushing out but the Argentinian goes past him as well and rolls the ball into the net.

It was a spectacular goal which was seen around the world and is still being spoken about a decade on. Messi was already a star in FC Barcelona’s first team at this point and he was beginning to take his place as one of the best in the world. Ten years later, Barça’s number ‘10’ is only two goals away from scoring his 500th for the Club.
