Match Report FC Barcelona Lassa v Bidasoa Irun: Asobal League Champions! (39-25)

The blaugranas win the domestic league title for a seventh consecutive season having defeated the Basque side at the Palau Blaugrana

FC Barcelona Lassa handball team needed at least a draw to secure the Asobal League title. The blaugranas didn’t disappoint as they powered to a convincing 39-25 victory over Bidasoa Irun. The close-fought and tense victory over Ademar León left the title within touching distance last weekend and Pascual’s side were able to celebrate in front of their fans at the Palau following tonight’s win.

They dominated throughout the match aware of the importance of the fixture. The 24-12 score at the break reflected the Catalans’ superiority with Aitor Ariño and Thimothey N’Guessan particularly prominent following five first-half goals apiece. The Basques attempted to keep in touch but Barça built a commanding ten-goal lead by the 19th minute (16-6). Eventually they stretched this to 22-10 thanks to an N´Guessan goal in the 26th minute.

On course for seventh Asobal League in a row

The lead was commanding and it became even more so as Barça refused to let their guard down. They played with intensity throughout the match as they looked for their 117th consecutive league win which would win them their 7th Asobal title in succession and 24th in total. Ariño finished the match as the top scorer, with seven, and he gave Barça a 17-goal lead in the 48th minute.

With Kiel on the horizon, Pascual was able to rotate his squad and he gave some of his main players a rest. Barça B keeper Gerard Forns made his debut for the side when he substituted Ristovski. None of the changes made any difference and Pascual’s side marched on to yet another victory which extends their stunning run and gives them their seventh league title in a row.

Record-breaking domination

The blaugranas’ victory against Bidasoa Irun secured the club’s 24th league title five days before their EHF VELUX Champions League quarter final fixture against Kiel. Barça Lassa have extended their incredible history in the competition with their total of 24 ASOBAL League leaving them way ahead of BM Granollers, with 13, and Atlético Madrid, with 11. They are also the only side to have won seven titles in a row and this is down to their quite stunning winning run of 117 consecutive league victories. It is safe to say that we are witnessing a very special team. Congratulations!
