Zaragoza CFF 0-9 FC Barcelona: Rout to start league campaign

Fran Sánchez's side kicked off their domestic season with a comprehensive and impressive away victory

The start of the Fran Sánchez era with Barça Women couldn’t have gone better as his side kicked off their league campaign with a stunning 9-0 win away to Zaragoza CFF. Goals from Marta Torrejón (2), Alexia (2), Mariona, Andressa Alves (2), Bárbara Latorre and Toni Duggan secured a very comfortable victory. The match also saw Natassa Andonova and Élise Bussaglia make their league debuts and Lieke Martens and Toni Duggan play their first game for the Club.

The game started with Barça looking for an early goal. Mariona Caldentey went close first but her effort went wide. Alexia also had a couple of chances before Torrejón opened the scoring from a Bussaglia delivery. Once the first had gone in the blaugranas were completely in control and comfortable as they went about extending their lead.

Alexia scored the second in the 23rd minute from a scrappy move. Barça kept going and their intensity meant they scored another two in a four-minute burst through Andressa Alves and Mariona Caldentey. With 4-0 on the scoreboard, the blaugranas still had time to add two more before the break. This time Alexia got her second before Andressa Alves converted a penalty to give her side a massive six-goal lead after the first 45 minutes.

Relentless blaugranas

The players would be forgiven for easing up in the second half but this was not the case and they added a seventh within the first five minutes. A good move down the left by Andressa Alves was finished excellently by Bárbara Latorre. Torrejón then made it 8-0 with only ten minutes gone of the half.

With twenty mintues to play and the result decided, we saw the debuts of Toni Duggan and Lieke Martens in a Barça shirt. Both players made good first impressions and the English striker managed to mark her debut with a goal of her own. The win was decisive and allows Barça to move into first place and head into the league campaign with real optimism.
