Granadilla v FC Barcelona Women: Winning run ends (1-0)

Fran Sánchez's team lose to Tenerife in a tough away fixture in which they hit the post twice in attack

Barça Women weren’t able to secure any points form their away match against Granadilla. A Simpson goal in the 10th minute was enough for the home side to secure a win against Fran Sánchez’s team, who were unable to find a way through the team from Tenerife’s defence.

As Fran Sánchez expected, the fixture turned out to be a tough away game. They were at one of the toughest away grounds in the league and they struggled to get into any kind of rhythm because of the opposition’s high press. The pitch is a small one and Barça had to resort to long balls over the Granadilla defence.

Granadilla score

Sandra Paños had to be alert in goal as the home side threatened early on. The blaugranas were struggling to control possession and they were punished when a scrappy passage of play in their box ended with Simpson putting the home team ahead.

The team from Tenerife tried to create chances on the break and from dead ball situations. Barça responded to going behind through Duggan and Aitana who both had good chances. Martens, after a great individual move, almost equalised but Pili saved well.

Stopped by the post

The blaugranas started the second half in confident mood and they started creating more dangerous openings. Fran Sánchez brought on Olga García and Leila. Olga was the most active playe in the second half and she tried everything. She went closest as she unluckily sent two headers onto the post.

Luck wasn’t on Barça’s side and they were running out of time. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to score and the blaugranas’ run of wins came to an end as Atlético Madrid overtook them at the top of the table. It was Barça Women’s first defeat of the season following a great start of eight wins and one draw.
