Gerard Piqué: 'I can only see myself in a Barça shirt'

The Barça centre back put pen to paper to his contract extension until 2022 and made it clear that leaving the Club was never an option

This Monday Gerard Piqué made official his contract extension at FC Barcelona until 2022. The new deal sees the defender commit to the Club until beyond his 35th birthday and will see him have spent 14 years with the first team as a professional. The blaugrana was more than delighted at the prospect: “I am really happy to be celebrating my extension because this is my home and since my return, my desire has been to end my career here.”

In the Ricard Maixenchs press room at Camp Nou, president Josep Maria Bartomeu also cited the important of Pique’s desire to commit his future to the blaugranes. “It’s a special day, Gerard Piqué is an experienced player, a Barça fan from birth and let’s hope we can continue to keep winning trophies. The deal was an easy one,” said the president in front of the gathered media.

The Barça number 3 thanked the Board at the Club, his family and the coaching staff and players for helping him “wear the shirt of the club of my life.”

“Barça is my home and I thank everyone who has made it possible to continue here,” added Piqué.

Finally, for Gerard Piqué there was never any question of him playing elsewhere: “I can only see myself in a Barça shirt. If I had not extended my contract then I would have stopped playing because I only play football because I play for Barça.”
