Equal best ever start to a season
Barça 2026/27 just keep on winning. The excellent feeling surrounding the team at the start of the season is backed up by the numbers: goals, points and victories. Six wins from the first six competitive games. One in the Champions League, against Feyenoord, and five in LaLiga, against Elche, Athletic Club, Rayo, Valencia and now Levante.
Fourth time
That run sees the team coached by Hansi Flick equal the record for the best 100% winning start to a season, previously achieved by just three Barça sides in the club's history. For the first, we have to go back almost a century to the 1929/30 season, the second edition of the Spanish league, when James Bellamy's side won their opening six games.
Three decades later, in 1960/61, Ljubiša Broćić's side repeated the feat, winning their first four league games and both legs of their European Cup round of 32 tie against Belgian side Lierse. More than half a century then passed before it happened again, in 2018/19, with Ernesto Valverde at the helm.
Chance to go further
On that occasion, there was the added curiosity that the six wins came in three different competitions. The first competitive game of the season was the Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla, followed by four successive LaLiga victories, before the sixth game brought a 4-0 Champions League win against PSV. All three of those Barça teams won six. But not seven.
The class of 29 drew with Athletic Club at Les Corts, the 1960 team lost to Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano, and Valverde's team drew 2-2 at home to Girona. Now the current Barça side have the perfect opportunity to go one better. This Wednesday, against Racing at the Spotify Camp Nou, they can make history.
