This Sunday, FC Barcelona face FC Basel in their third preseason fixture. After the 2-2 draw in Birmingham and the triangular tournament in Udine, featuring two 45-minute games, Hansi Flick’s side travel to Switzerland for a friendly against at 4.30pm CEST start at St. Jakob-Park, live on Barça Play and the club’s YouTube channel in Spain.

Basel already into the league

The home side have more match practice under their belts than the visitors, having already played three league games, as well as four friendlies beforehand, the most recent against Juventus.

The Swiss side have won 21 league titles and 14 cups. Their most recent league title came two seasons ago, ending a drought of almost 10 years. The return of captain and star player Xherdan Shaqiri, who registered 43 goal contributions, was key to lifting the long-awaited trophy. Now 34, Shaqiri remains their standout player.

On the bench is a young coach well known for his playing career in European football: Stephan Lichtsteiner. The 42-year-old Swiss coach, who spent more than seven seasons as at Juventus, has been in charge of Basel since January 2026.

This will be Barça's first visit in 18 years to the city that sits on the borders of Germany and France, one that brings back all kinds of memories for older fans.

Near-full squad

The World Cup semi-finalists and finalists returned from their holidays this week. With new arrival Anthony Gordon, Frenchman Jules Koundé and five of the seven Spanish internationals now back, Hansi Flick has most of his squad available for the trip to Basel and to prepare for the start of official competition.
