FC Barcelona took part this Thursday in the tribute to Josep Sunyol i Garriga, Club president between 1935 and 1936, marking the 90th anniversary of his execution in the Guadarrama mountain range on 6 August 1936, during the early weeks of the Spanish Civil War.

The ceremony, organised by the Comissió de la Dignitat and several other organisations, took place at El Gurugú Park in Guadarrama, beside the memorial plaque installed in 1996 in honour of the former FC Barcelona president and member of the spanish Parliament.

Representing the Club was Institutional Vice-President Elena Fort, who took part in the floral tribute and highlighted Sunyol's legacy and Barça's responsibility to preserve his memory.

"Barça is more than a club because it represents a country, and the figure of Josep Sunyol should always remind us of that," said Fort, who underlined FC Barcelona's historic bond with Catalonia and its commitment to democratic values.

The Institutional Vice-President also stressed the importance of passing this legacy on to future generations and to everyone who becomes part of the Club from around the world.

"It is this Club's duty to honour his memory and his ideals, and above all to pass them on to future generations," she said. Fort added that "it is more important than ever to explain who we are", noting that everyone who joins Barça—whether players, members or supporters—should understand the Club's identity, its language, its history and its bond with Catalonia.

On behalf of President Joan Laporta, Elena Fort reaffirmed FC Barcelona's commitment to keeping Josep Sunyol's memory alive and to continuing to explain his significance as an essential part of the Club's history.

Josep Sunyol is one of the most emblematic figures in Barça's history. Club president from July 1935 until August 1936, his commitment to FC Barcelona, Catalonia and democratic values remains a fundamental part of the Club's institutional legacy.

Ninety years after his execution, Barça returned to Guadarrama to honour his memory and reaffirm its commitment to preserving and passing on his legacy to future generations.
