Josep Sunyol was captured and executed by firing squad on 6 August 1936, during the opening weeks of the Spanish Civil War. He had travelled from Madrid to the Guadarrama mountain front to visit Republican troops after reading reports of supposed military advances. He was accompanied by journalist Pere Ventura i Virgili, a militia lieutenant and their driver. After inadvertently crossing the front line, they entered Nationalist-held territory and, once identified as Republicans, were executed without trial near the Alto del León mountain pass. Sunyol's remains have never been found. Searches carried out in 2010 and 2022 using geophysical and aerial survey technology, with the support of FC Barcelona, were unsuccessful.
