Valencia 3-1 FC Barcelona: Defeat at the Mestalla stadium
A loss to bring the LaLiga season to an end for FC Barcelona, as Valencia defeated the league champions 3-1 at the Mestalla stadium. Robert Lewandowski managed to get a goal in his final match for the blaugranes, before Valencia came back through Javi Guerra, Luis Rioja and Guido Rodríguez, who were trying to qualify for Europe, but fell short despite the three points.
Goalless first half
The home side were in the hunt for the three points that might take them into the European qualification places and began strongly. They had the first good chance through Diego López, who fired over. Hugo Duro also headed over and when they did get an effort on target, Wojciech Szczęsny was alert to the danger.
FC Barcelona had possession, but were less penetrating than on previous outings. Marcus Rashford looked most lively down the left and Robert Lewandowski came closest in the first half as his header from a corner rattled against the upright. 0-0 at halftime.
Lewy says goodbye with a goal
The second half began less intensely, but a goal was soon forthcoming and who else but Robert Lewandowski. The Polish marksman showed his striker's instincts remain very much intact by diverting a Ferran Torres volley into the goal for his last in an FC Barcelona jersey.
Home side comeback
The goal seemed to embolden Valencia CF, Javi Guerra and Luis Rioja scoring in quick succession to complete a comeback. Cue the celebrations at the Mestalla stadium, but the quest for a European spot still needed other results to go their way.
Another moment of note saw Andreas Christensen return after 158 days out with injury and then the loss was confirmed when Guido Rodríguez fired inside the post from the edge of the area late on.
