Janus Smárason to join Barça as playmaker
Agreement reached between FC Barcelona and Janus Smárason (Reykjavik, 1995) for the player to join this summer through to 30 June 2029. The Icelandic international will join the blaugranes once his contract with Pick Szeged ends, after having been a lynchpin there for two seasons.
Janus Smárason (1.84 m) is a centre back with great playmaking qualities, and he can find the pivots and add direct goalscoring. What's more, his physical prowess means he can defend as a number two.
The Icelandic centre back is in his sporting prime, having enjoyed a top-class career to date, starting out in the youth system at Haukar Hafnarfjordur in his home country, going on to spend time in Denmark, Germany, Norway and Hungary before arriving at Barça.
The new blaugrana player has already won trophies such as the Club World Championship, the Bundesliga and the German Cup, as well as domestic titles in Denmark and Norway.
Smárason is currently in his second season with OTP Bank Pick Szeged, having won a Hungarian Cup with the club. Prior to that he played for Magdeburg (2023/24), Kolstad (2022/23), Frisch Auf Goppingen in the Bundesliga (2020/2023) and for Aalborg (2017/20).
The centre back is also a key member of the Iceland national team, alongside current blaugrana Viktor Hallgrímsson. Iceland managed to finish fourth in the European Championships in January, their best finish in the competition in the last 16 years.
Smárason played in 9 games in the European Championship, scoring 29 goals, with 76% shooting efficiency.
Janus Smárason: "Hopefully I can come with my strength and mentality to be a part of a very successful team"
The new blaugrana signing told the Club media that this is "a proud moment" for him and his family, and that he is "in the prime" of his career.
"Hopefully I can come with my strength and mentality to be a part of a very successful team. It's not so difficult when Barça call you. It's probably the biggest club in the world and for me as an athlete, to be a part of this family, I am honoured", he explained.
