The elections to decide the FC Barcelona president on March 15 will be the first to take place while a match is being played at the Spotify Camp Nou. There was a precedent on April 1, 1989, when voting for the Club president took place when there was a match at the stadium, but voting closed two hours before kick-off that day. It was also a Barça v Real Madrid match (0-0). Paraguayan forward Romerito (pictured) made his debut in blaugrana that day too.

So Sunday is set to be the first time that Barça members will be able to cast their vote while a match is underway, the LaLiga gameweek 28 fixture, Barça v Sevilla.

15th election to decide the presidency

In addition to this unique circumstance, the elections on March 15 will be the 15th time a president has been elected by the blaugrana fans since 1953, the year when the Club first held elections. Prior to that, presidents were designated by the Franco regime during the early years of the dictatorship, or chosen by an assembly from the founding of the Club up to the end of the Civil War.

As such, the Barça president was chosen by voting when there was no democracy in Spain in 1953, 1958, 1961, 1965, 1969 and 1973. After the dictator passed, elections were held in 1978, 1989, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2010, 2015 and 2021.

All the same, another democratic process is set to take place on March 15, reaffirming an exemplary tradition that is an indelible aspect of FC Barcelona identity.
