FC Barcelona launches Sustainable Mobility Plan for partial return to Spotify Camp Nou
As part of the partial return to the new Spotify Camp Nou, FC Barcelona is keen to highlight its strong commitment in recent years to a more efficient and sustainable mobility model. After working with Barcelona City Council on the Mobility Plan for the Estadi Olimpic Lluís Companys, the club has continued along the same lines for the return to the Spotify Camp Nou, reaffirming its firm commitment to sustainability and responsible mobility.
This joint work with the City Council has resulted in a Sustainable Mobility Plan with two main objectives: speeding up access to and departure from the stadium by prioritising sustainable transport, and guaranteeing that local residents can reach their homes easily while preserving pedestrian routes and spaces. As part of the Mobility Monitoring Committee for Espai Barça, residents of Les Corts district have been informed of all details of the plan.
FC Barcelona’s return to the Spotify Camp Nou will be gradual. In this first phase, the stadium will operate at around 40% of its final capacity, with almost 46,000 people across the Main Stand, South Goal and Lateral stands, which correspond to phases 1A and 1B.
The expected distribution of attendees at the new-look stadium is as follows:
- Public and group transport: 43.4%
- Cars and motorbikes: 22.7%
- Foot and bicycles: 33.9%
The Sustainable Mobility Plan for the partial return to the Spotify Camp Nou is structured around several areas: organising the different types of transport, with special emphasis on promoting walking, which is by far the most common type, as well as personal mobility vehicles (PMVs), public transport, new routes and parking areas for coaches, taxi regulations, and restrictions on private vehicle access (cars and motorbikes).
The plan also guarantees access for residents living closest to the stadium. Car access routes, except for vehicles heading to the stadium’s own parking facilities, will be prioritised along the perimeter formed by Avinguda Diagonal, Gran Via de Carles III and Avinguda Doctor Marañón, allowing access to private car parks in this part of Les Corts. Vehicles heading to the stadium car park will enter via Avinguda Gregorio Marañón and occasionally via Travessera de les Corts.
Regarding public transport, existing services will be optimised. The stadium area is served by three metro lines (L3: Palau Reial, Les Corts, Zona Universitària, Maria Cristina; L5: Collblanc, Badal, Ernest Lluch; L9S/L10: Collblanc; L9S: Zona Universitària), three tram lines (T1, T2 and T3) with stops at Avinguda de Xile, Palau Reial, Ernest Lluch, Pius XII, Zona Universitària and Maria Cristina, and 12 urban and interurban bus lines (7, 33, 67, 54, H6, H8, V1, V3, V5, D20 and lines 113 and 175 on weekdays).
Users are advised to consult detailed public transport timetables on the AMB Mobilitat website.
• Traffic restrictions on Carrer Mejía Lequerica and around Carrer Felipe de Paz
Residents have requested access controls for certain residential streets such as Carrer Mejía Lequerica and the area around Carrer Felipe de Paz, where traffic congestion had been observed. The plan therefore includes restricted-access zones in these areas on matchdays, which will be monitored with traffic cameras. Les Corts District Council is currently working on the procurement and installation of this technology.
Carrer Mejía Lequerica had previously been used as a shortcut to avoid Gran Via de Carles III and Travessera de les Corts. The new measure restricts traffic to authorised vehicles only, namely residents, car park users and essential services. The restriction applies to the entire street.
On matchdays, streets around Carrer Felipe de Paz (within the perimeter of Travessera de les Corts, Gran Via de Carles III, Avinguda de Madrid and Carrer Riera Blanca) often became saturated. To prevent this, four permanent control points with cameras will be installed at: the contraflow bus lane on Travessera de les Corts, Carrer Benavent with Travessera de les Corts, Carrer Arizala with Felipe de Paz, and the contraflow bus lane on Avinguda de Madrid. These will allow resident access on matchdays.
• Motorbike parking and preserving pavements for pedestrians
Within a 1 km radius of the stadium, around 3,200 motorbike parking spaces will be available in the Zona Universitaria (South Campus). Notably, the Bederrida site (former university car park) will provide space for 750 vehicles, accessed via Carrer Martí i Franquès. Additional motorbike parking will be available on Carrer Pau Gargallo, Carrer Llorens i Artigas, Avinguda Diagonal, Carrer Pascual i Vila, Carrer Samitier, Carrer Salvador Cardenal and Carrer Sabino Arana.
• Coach departures and access for residents of Avinguda de Xile
A key part of the Plan is ensuring smooth coach operations while maintaining resident access. Coaches will drop off passengers on the upper section of Carrer Martí i Franquès near Avinguda Diagonal, and park on FC Barcelona’s site where the old Miniestadi was located. Entry and exit will be via Avinguda Gregorio Marañón and Avinguda Arístides Maillol. This setup allows Avinguda de Xile to remain open to traffic at all times. For post-match pick-up, coaches will move to Avinguda Doctor Gregorio Marañón heading toward the central section of Avinguda Diagonal, with the option of using the mountain-side bus lane if needed.
• Taxis and Hire with Driver services
With the aim of improving the taxi service on matchdays, and preventing these vehicles from contributing to congestion and road safety problems on Travessera de les Corts, the Sustainable Mobility Plan concentrates the drop-off, parking and pick-up point for taxis on Carrer de Menéndez y Pelayo, an area very close to the Spotify Camp Nou and which only requires short and intuitive pedestrian routes.
Vehicles for Hire with Driver (VTC) will also be able to make use of the drop-off area on Carrer Menéndez Pelayo set up for taxis. The pick-up point will be on demand by users.
• People with Reduced Mobility
With regard to vehicles driven by people with reduced mobility (PRM), three parking areas will be set up on Travessera de les Corts, between Carrer Elisabeth Eidenbenz and Carrer Mejía Lequerica (100 m, 2 minutes on foot from Access V, Gate 22 of the stadium), on Avinguda Aristides Maillol, between Avinguda Doctor Gregorio Marañón and Carrer del Cardenal Reig (550 m, 7 minutes on foot from Access V, Gate 22 of the stadium), and on the lower part of Carrer Martí i Franquès with Avinguda Joan XXIII (800 m, 10 minutes on foot from Access V, Gate 22 of the stadium).
• Improvement and transformation of Les Corts
The renovation of the public space around the stadium forms part of the new plan devised jointly by the City Council, FC Barcelona, residents and organisations, so that the transformation of Espai Barça will have a positive effect on the quality of the public space of the entire surrounding area. Within this framework is the new design of Carrer de Menéndez y Pelayo and Avinguda de Joan XXIII carried out by FC Barcelona in coordination with Barcelona City Council.
This project includes the creation of a large open space around the stadium, removing the external fence, levelling out the ground, and redeveloping and widening the surrounding streets in order to reorganise vehicle and pedestrian access. In addition, new urban furniture was installed, along with a new and more efficient high-performance lighting system. A new cycle lane was also introduced, extending along Avinguda de Joan XXIII and up to Plaça de Pius XII, on Avinguda Diagonal.
