Stats from half an hour of madness
One of the most amazing things about Barça's recovery from 2-0 down against Real Madrid is that such heroics are not unusual at all for Barça under Hansi Flick.
Incredibly, this was the sixth time time this season that Barça have come from behind to win. It happened against Valencia (from 0–1 to 2–1), against Rayo (0–1 to 2–1), against Atlético Madrid (0–2 to 4–2), against Celta (1–3 to 4–3), against Valladolid (0–1 to 2–1) and this Sunday against Real Madrid (0–2 to 4–3).
But what happened in the La Liga Clásico at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys goes further. It’s true we’ve seen Barça come back from 2-0 down or concede a two-goal lead and still equalise or go ahead several times this league season, and we also had spectacular comebacks against Atlético in the cup, and Dortmund in Europe, and in both legs against Inter the Italians scored the first two goals, although despite the double fightback things didn't end quite so well...
But such a comeback against Real Madrid was until now unprecedented.
Indeed, it’s the first time in Barça’s history that they’ve gone into half-time leading by two or more goals after battling back from two goals down. Against Madrid, Mbappé’s double (strikes in the 5th and 14th minutes) made things very difficult, but Barça’s response with goals from Eric García, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha (2) was simple astounding.
It’s only the second time Barça have erased a two-goal deficit so quickly. The only greater comeback was the 2–3 win over Athletic Club on 31 March 1935, when Ferenc Plattkó’s side scored three goals in 29 minutes.
Four out of four in the Clásicos
And for the first time, FC Barcelona have won every Clásico contested in a single season. The 2024/25 campaign thus ended with a perfect four-for-four: 4-0 at the Bernabéu, 5-2 in the Spanish Super Cup final, 3–2 in the Copa del Rey final and 4–3 in today's game at Montjuïc. Absolute blaugrana hegemony.
