Stats from a tough exit to take
It was a very agonising exit. The 4-3 defeat at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium in the semifinal return leg has left Barça without a ticket for the final in Munich. A Barça who again showed they are one of the best teams in Europe, coming out on top in many aspects of the game.
4 vs 0
Luck played a big part in the knockout round and it wasn't on the blaugranes' side. Barça hit woodwork four times, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal (twice) in the first leg, and then Lamine Yamal had the chance to make it 2-4 just before the 3-3, but he was again denied. In contrast, none of Inter's efforts hit the woodwork.
1451 vs 584
The total number of passes for Barça compared to Inter throughout the knockout tie. The blaugranes completed more in the first leg and did so again in Milan in the return leg. Inter were more decisive in each area, however. Barça completed 768 passes in Milan, with De Jong and Pedri completing most with 118 and 84 respectively. Bastoni completed most for Inter with just 26.
72% and 28% in both games
The possession percentages in both legs of the knockout tie. Barça clearly monopolised the ball, but the Italian side made the most of their more defensive style and effectiveness in front of goal to go through. Less football and more goals, a true feat achieved by Inter.
41 vs 20
More of the same when it came to shots. Barça had more than double than Inter. No matter the result at the time, Flick's side kept pushing to try to score more goals. The return leg saw Lamine Yamal lead the blaugrana attack, having nine of the 22 Barça shots, five of which were on target. Inter were more efficient with their shots, though, with seven from 13 on target, while 10 from 22 were on target for Barça.
59 vs 16
The total number of crosses into the area across the two legs. The return leg saw Flick's side score their first two goals from crosses by Gerard Martín, with a big overall lead in the stats. Conversely, Inter only managed 16 crosses across the entire tie.
5 vs 99
A good stat to sum up the tie. Barça were only ahead for five of the 210 minutes played. Specifically minutes 88 to 93 of the return leg when 2-3 up before Acerbi equalised. On the other hand, Inter were ahead for 99 minutes of the tie.
Barça were trailing practically the entire time of a highly demanding tie from a mental and physical standpoint. When they did manage to go ahead, they only had to hold out just a bit longer. A real shame.
