Mixed fortunes in Seville finals
It may seem like there have been more, but FC Barcelona have only played three Copa del Rey finals in Seville. As such, 26 April will make it four in the city of the Guadalquivir river, out of the 43 the blaugranes have reached in their history. However, the records also show that there was a European Cup final and a Spanish Super Cup final played in the Andalusian capital.
From Copa del Rey joy in the first...
The link between FC Barcelona and finals in Seville began way back on 10 May 1925 at the Reina Victoria stadium. A first chapter of success, as the blaugranes lifted the trophy after defeating Arenas Club de Getxo 0-2. Josep Samitier and Agustí Sancho scored the goals that brought unbridled joy to FC Barcelona fans, who were celebrating just their sixth Copa del Rey, thanks to that Barça from the golden age.
A moment of happiness also thanks to legendary players such as Férenc Plattkó, defenders Josep Planas, Andreu Bosch, Agustí Sancho, Domènec Carulla, Vicente Piera, Emili Sagi and Pep Samitier, who cede the way to a tough night in the history of Barça finals in Seville. For the second final in this look back, we move to 1986 and a day to forget, the European Cup final.
...to European disappointment in the second
Barça lost their first final in the Andalusian capital at the Sánchez Pizjuán stadium. A day of misfortune for the team coached by Terry Venables against Steaua Bucharest. It was the second European Cup final for the blaugranes and it didn't end positively either. The Romanian side tasted glory thanks to their goalkeeper, Duckadam, who proved a nightmare for the FC Barcelona that day in Seville. The game finished 0-0 and the stopper saved no fewer than four penalties from the rueful Alexanco, Pedraza, Pichi Alonso, and Marcos Alonso.
Before moving to the third time in this particular story of single match games, three Spanish Super Cup finals were also played in Seville, but they were two-legged affairs. Barça won them all in the Catalan capital, as the return leg was always at Spotify Camp Nou, with Betis defeated in 2005, followed by Seville in 2010 and 2016.
Benito Villamarín stadium hosted the third
It was 33 years before FC Barcelona had the chance to win another trophy in Seville in a single match final. This time it was at the Benito Villamarín stadium, a different pitch, but with the same disappointing outcome. Ernesto Valverde's side reached the 2019 Copa del Rey final looking to lift a fifth Copa del Rey in a row. After winning LaLiga, players such as Messi, Piqué, Busquets and Rakitic were unfortunately unable to prevent Valencia from lifting the Copa del Rey in Seville that day.
Two more in 2021 with different outcomes
It seemed like Seville only brought bad luck for FC Barcelona, because 2021 saw the blaugranes lose another final, this time at the La Cartuja stadium. Played behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Athletic Club won against Ronald Koeman's Barça side to lift the single match Spanish Super Cup.
However, we can finally put those bad memories aside for the last final in the Andalusian capital. Again in 2021, the legendary Holland player's side got their revenge against the side from Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final, again at the La Cartuja stadium, which is of course playing host to the final clash between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid on 26 April.
A resounding 0-4 to win the Copa del Rey, the last one to sit proudly in the Museum. Definitely a special trophy as it was the last for Leo Messi in the blaugrana jersey, but also the first for players such as Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, Araujo, Ansu Fati, and Iñaki Peña. Current squad members who will want to see the ticker tape again in Seville. A city where FC Barcelona want to write another successful chapter in their history in a final.
