18 April 2000 was one of the great Barça nights, when the club welcomed Chelsea to Camp Nou for the second leg of a Champions League quarter final, having lost 3-1 at Stamford Bridge and in need of something special to turn the tie around. And special is what we got, as older fans will fondly remember.

A huge mosaic greeted the players onto the field, with club and Catalan colours and the scoreline 2-0, which was the minimum result that Barça would need back in the days when away goals still counted double. As it happened, the fans would get more than they asked for.

Things got off to the right start when Rivaldo opened the scoring and Luis Figo added a second just before the break. As things stood, Barça were semi-final bound. But Chelsea came out much stronger in the second half, and silenced the crowd when Norwegian Tore André Flo made it 2-1 on the hour mark.

Barça had half an hour to get a goal and force extra time, knowing that another Chelsea goal would leave them needing three. With seven minutes to go, Dani García finally did it and there were 30 more minutes of tense football to be played.

Extra time glory

Barça were by the far the superior side in added time, and a Rivaldo penalty restored their lead before Kluivert finished things off. We were through to the last four of the competition in the most dramatic of circumstances!
