Xavi & Lucho: six years together in blaugrana

From 1998 to 2004 Xavi Hernández and Luis Enrique were team mates on the field, later as player and coach and now they meet as opponents

When the quarter-final tie pitching FC Barcelona and PSG together in the Champions League was drawn in Nyon at UEFA's headquarters, thoughts inevitably turned to the showdown between the two coaches, Xavi Hernández and Luis Enrique - two men with a blaugrana past in common.

Six seasons together

The two men were team mates at FC Barcelona between 1998 and 2004. Xavi Hernández's debut for the Barça first team in March 1998 saw him become part of the same squad as Luis Enrique and the following season the two players were crowned league champions in Barça's centenary year.

During their six years in the dressing room together they appeared together for 7,464 minutes on the field across 128 matches in all competitions. Luis Enrique provided assists for two Xavi goals and the current Barça boss provided four for his Asturian team mate.

With Luis Enrique as coach

The six years as players together was augmented by the one season Xavi spent playing under Luis Enrique as coach. In the 2014/15 season Xavi captained a blaugranes team coached by his former team mate to a spectacular treble, culminating in victory over Juventus in the Champions League final in the midfielder final game for the club. Now, almost a decade on, their paths meet again once more in Europe's top club competition.
